Position Open:
Executive Director

The Main Street Buena Vista Executive Director (ED) leads the operations of MAIN STREET BUENA VISTA (MSBV) to enhance the vitality of Downtown Buena Vista as the social, cultural, and economic heart of the community. 

This is a flexible, project-based position (approximately 15-20 hours per week). The ED reports to the MSBV Board of Directors and is responsible for the following:

  • Coordinating and implementing all organizational activities as represented in the Main Street Four Point Approach, including guiding the organization as it evolves.

  • Supervising MSBV administrative staff and volunteers as well as contract and professional consultants.

  • Representing the community and MSBV regionally and nationally at stakeholder events, trainings, meetings, and public speaking engagements.

  • Building strong and productive relationships with public officials at the local, state, and national level; including the City of Buena Vista, Rockbridge County, City of Lexington, and the Virginia Main Street Program. This further includes maintaining relationships with and providing monthly reports to City Council.  

  • Coordinating the activities of the MSBV committees, ensuring clear and effective communication among and across committees and assisting committee chairs in setting priorities and developing work plans.

  • Developing and conducting on­going public awareness and promotional campaigns to enhance appreciation of Downtown Buena Vista and an understanding of MSBV’s program goals and objectives.

  • Promoting MSBV at public and business forums, speaking engagements, media interviews, personal appearances, etc. to keep the program in the public eye. This includes working closely with local media to ensure maximum coverage of promotional activities and encouraging design excellence in promotional materials to advance the quality image of downtown.

  • Facilitating the community’s ability to carry out joint-partnership activities, including but not limited to: 

    • Collaborating with local businesses on promotional events, advertising, special events (for example: Mountain Day), business assistance and recruitment, parking management, etc. 

    • Encouraging a cooperative climate and information sharing between Downtown businesses and interests and with the City of Buena Vista. 

    • Advising the Downtown Buena Vista merchant and business community, the Visitors Center, and the Chamber of Commerce on MSBV activities and goals.

  • Serving as an ambassador and key resource in the recruitment of businesses to locate in Downtown Buena Vista. 

  • Carrying out all required financial, administrative, and reporting responsibilities of Main Street Buena Vista ensuring completion on a monthly basis. 

  • Collaborating with the Board of Directors on strategic plans, goals, and objectives and carrying out those tasks with the Board. 

  • Creating and overseeing fundraising strategies and the financial sustainability of MSBV. 

 

Skills and Qualifications

  • Able to inspire and engage others in the vision and mission of MSBV

  • Effective communicator

  • Experience soliciting and securing donations, grants, or other fundraising efforts

  • Local knowledge of Buena Vista

  • Experience in community engagement and volunteer development

  • Comfortable using digital tools (Google Drive / Docs, social media, MailChimp)

  • Familiar with Facebook and Instagram, as well as other digital and traditional marketing

  • Experience implementing large-scale public events

  • Strong organizational and time management skills

  • Must be able to execute: Spooktacular trick or treating, Christmas tree lighting, partner of Mountain Day, and report to City Council once a month as an agenda item.
